The scriptures place great importance on acquiring wisdom. A search on the word “wisdom” in Biblegateway.com gives 231 results, which gives us some understanding as to its value. Wisdom is not to be confused with intelligence. It is entirely possible to have one without the other. For one to be intelligent one must have the “capacity for learning, reasoning, understanding, and similar forms of mental activity; aptitude in grasping truths, relationships, facts, meanings, etc.” (dictionary.com) Most of us have that capacity on some level and the extent to which we use it is entirely up to the individual.
Wisdom on the other hand is a state of being “the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight” (dictionary.com) . Wisdom requires that one have the ability to judge, to discern between right and wrong, good and evil. Wisdom ensures that you have the presence of mind to share Godly insight and be able to discern what is profitable to the body of Christ. So how do we acquire Godly wisdom? We could do what Solomon did and ask. The word of God plainly tells us If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him , James 1:5.
Psalm 84:11 (NKJV) assures us the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. So wisdom being a good thing, it will not be withheld from those that ask and walk uprightly. Not only will he give wisdom to those that lack it he will give liberally, freely generously abundantly wthout reproach, without censure or criticism.
Godly wisdom is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy James 3:17.NKJV
Why then should we desire such a gift? As witnesses and ambassadors of Christ it is imperative that we know when to speak and when to be silent. It is equally important that we be able to rightly divide the word of truth. We are charged and entrusted with a tremendous appointment as those that have been saved by the grace of God. As witness of our love for Christ, we have been instructed to feed his sheep. John 21:17 To do that which we have been called to do we must do so with Godly wisdom; a wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
Proverb tells us only fools despise wisdom and instruction. Wisdom gives us understanding and the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Proverbs also reminds us Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding. Proverbs 3:13
I have found as I grow in Christ and grow in his grace that I desire more of HIS wisdom that I may be a strong and faithful witness to his word. That I might be able to discern good from evil; that I might speak when the need arises and remain silent when it is prudent to do so. These things come only with Godly wisdom. When sharing a word of wisdom, it may not always be welcome but it will always prevail.
Prayer: Father we sincerely desire understanding and wisdom that we might be strong and true witnesses to your word.
